Lecturer in Popular Music

James Kelly, presents his practice-led research which identifies a methodology for music composition that employs vinyl disc cutting as a compositional tool. As a turntablist for the last 15 years, James’ music explores the remixing of vinyl using DJ scratch techniques for the creation of new music. The project presented at the Avenue Gallery takes his compositional approach in new directions by utilising a disc cutting lathe - a machine which is traditionally used in the manufacture of records. 

The mechanism and limitations of the lathe itself is used as an artistic tool to shape the music. The exhibition presents an archive of vinyl records cut during the research process to exemplify a number of experimental disc cutting techniques. James will be introducing his research and performing a live remix of his records in the gallery space during the private view.

The Turntable Music Symposium and performances will take place in the gallery on the 28th of January with guest speakers Karin Weissenbrunner (City University) and Lisa Busby (Goldsmiths).

Leigh Landy, Louise Rossiter, Virginie Viel: Martini Elettrico Concerts, Bologna Conservatoire, 24-28 March

During an Erasmus+ trip to the Bologna Conservatoire, Leigh Landy will be giving 3 public talks and leading an MTI concert that includes student works by Louise Rossiter and Virginie Viel alongside a piece of his own.

The trip has been made possible by support from #DMUGlobal.

Such events are taking place as part of the 'Martini Elettrico' concert and lecture series, which will be running between the 24th and 28th of March 2015.

The Royal College of Music Stockholm (KMH), another of MTI's Erasmus+ partners, is also giving a concert during the last week in March.

Recent News: Neal Spowage – Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space Shortlist & Crafting Anatomies Exhibition

Postgraduate student Neal Spowage has had two of his recent collaborations with Danai Pappa shortlisted for the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space in June 2015. The works are Cold Papaya for speaker bra and wireless shovel, and Frozen Venus for six plunger phones. 

They are being considered for the DISK performances in the Spacelab section of the performing arts festival that explores the themes of shared space, interpreting music, weather and politics.

Additionally, Neal has recently collaborated with Ania Sadkowska, a postgraduate researcher from Nottingham Trent University, to produce a soundtrack for her fashion work that is constructed from her research interviews. It was on a continuous loop, accompanying Ania's garments, at the Crafting Anatomies exhibition in the Bonnington Gallery at NTU between 7th January to 14th February 2015.

Crafting Anatomies placed the human body at the centre of a multi-disciplinary dialogue; exploring how this entity has been interpreted, crafted and re-imagined in historical, contemporary and future contexts.

Recent News: Luca Forcucci – Exhibition at Berlin's Scotty Enterprises + recent concerts

Electraoacoustic composer Luca Forcucci is currently hosting at exhibition at the Scotty Entreprise in Berlin until the 21st of February 2015. In a concert tonight (18/02/2015), Luca will perform 'In a Silent Way' – Audrey Chen (China/USA), Satch Hoyt (UK/USA) will also perform.

Throughout 2014 Luca participated in a wide variety of events. These include hosting a concert and workshop at RAME, receiving a grant from Pro Helvetia for research into EEG technology and also undertaking residencies at Berlin's ZK/U and the Swiss institute in Rome. Luca's compositions have been included in concert series across Italy, Switzerland and China.

• Artist's Talk at the International Symposium Border Sounds, Freiburg — Mar 21-22
• Presentation of M(a)(e)rgin(g)s at the Zentrum Fuer Kunst und Urbanstik, Berlin — May 23. "Soundscapes from the city of Sao Paulo in Brazil have been recorded. The sound is deterritorialised, abstracted from its original ‘milieu’, reterritorialised and attached to the structure of the ephemeral construction built by Studio OSK at ZK/U Berlin. An imaginary territory emerges through the layering of Sao Paulo, Berlin and the structure itself: a sonic Moiré pattern questioning borders."

He has an upcoming concert and seminar at Rencontres AME, Saillon — Aug 27-31, and a presentation at the Electroacoustic Music Studies conference in Berlin — Jun 12.

Works by Bret Battey at The Big Screen Project, NYC

Bret Battey's audiovisual compositions Autarkeia Aggregatum and Mercurius featured over several weeks at the Big Screen Project in New York City, along with works by computer animation pioneer Larry Cuba and artist Makoto Yabuki. The 10,000-square foot outdoor multimedia venue in midtown Manhattan features a 30 x 16 ft. HD-format LED screen. The show was curated by Leaders in Software and Art.

Summer 2011 Postgrad News

Yiannis Christofides's sound work for Water Rites, a video piece by Michael Kontopoulos, will be part of a group exhibition Speculative at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions in Hollywood, CA, curated by Christopher O’Leary and Zach Blas. Panos Amelides's fixed media audio piece Ritual Attacks will be performed at Pixilerations New Media Festival, which is produced by collaborators including Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design. http://pixilerations.org/2011/ 

Luca Forcucci won a residency in Shanghai for 4 months, where he will be working on a new composition. His latest work, Transition, has been reviewed on the EMF website www.emf.org. The premiere of his piece Music for Brainwaves occurred in Riverside, California, and is reviewed here. Luca also gave also a workshop to the students of the Faculty of Music at Riverside.
